“Codefest 2018” Coding for Humanity & Beyond

SLIIT recently hosted CodeFest 2018- the National coding Competition at SLIIT Malabe Campus. The event hosted for the seventh consecutive year by the Faculty of Computing of SLIIT is a unique initiative to provide a stage for the zealous programmers to frame their best code. This nationwide software competition which aims to harness student talent has emerged as the biggest coding event among School and University students in Sri Lanka.

The battle among the participants made the competition intense and appealing. Along with the software competition and school-level quiz competition a mini-hackathon also various other competitions were also conducted simultaneously.

School Category

ICT Quiz

The National ICT Quiz competition is an island-wide quiz competition which assess the ICT knowledge of the Sri Lankan school students. The technical knowhow and the applicability of ICT knowledge is highlighted in the competition. Initial round of the quiz competition involved a whopping 440 students representing 146 schools from all corners of the island. Gold award for this year’s competition is sponsored by ‘Ape Panthiya’ conducted by Prabudda Srimal.

  • Gold – Mahinda College, Galle
  • Silver – St. Thomas College, Mt. Lavinia
  • Bronze – Musaeus College, Colombo

Coding Contest- Junior

An island wide coding competition for school students from Grade 6 to Grade 10. Students are tasked with developing an innovative ICT based solution to improve the self-learning skills for any subject domain. Junior category involved 98 students, 46 teams representing 19 schools.

  • Gold – De Mazenod College, Kandana
  • Silver – Thurstan College, Colombo
  • Bronze – Sri Rahula College, Anuradhapura

Coding Contest- Senior

This year’s school coding competition was held under two categories. This is the advanced senior category of the school coding competition for school students above Grade 11. Senior category involved 124 students, 31 teams representing 19 schools.

  • Gold – Babul Hassen College, Kegalle
  • Silver – Central College, Bandarawela
  • Bronze – Central College, Pinnawala

 

Open Category

Emerging Innovator

A unique open competition which provides the platform for innovators from all corners of the island to showcase their ICT based innovations developed with cutting-edge technologies. Presented solutions are expected to uplift the society and contribute towards to sustainable development. Inaugural installment of the emerging innovator competition received 36 innovative submissions from 101 competitors.

Tertiary Category

 

Overnight Hackathon

Teams representing all Universities and Institutes of Sri Lanka compete to prove their software development expertise. The best ten teams of the first round compete in an overnight 24 hour competition to be crowned as the winners. This year’s competition exclusively sponsored and partnered by Virtusa involved 510 students, 147 teams representing 15 universities and institutes Islandwide.

Overnight Designathon

‘Designathon’ is a speed design challenge to design a desktop/web/mobile application to solve a real-world problem within 24 hours. This is an open competition for both novice and expert user experience designers. This year’s competition involved 50 teams representing 15 universities and institutes Islandwide.

  • Bronze – Plugins, University of Kelaniya

 

NetCom

NetCom competition provides a great opportunity for university students to showcase their networking skills under the theme ‘It’s not about winning, it’s about the process of learning beyond the classroom’. This year’s competition involved 110 student, 27 teams representing 5 universities. This competition is fully sponsored by Cisco Systems.

Capture the Flag

CTF is a distributed wide-area security exercise, of which the goal is to test the cyber security skills of the contestants. This year’s competition is the Sri Lanka’s largest of its kind with 34 teams representin

g 7 universities. Gold award for this year’s competition is sponsored by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) Sri Lanka.
